A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a juvenile in Gurgaon on Wednesday.

The accused is a 16-year-old boy who had allegedly lured the girl with Rs. 10 currency note and some eatables while her parents were away at work on Wednesday afternoon.

The boy was apprehended by police after the girl identified him.

A case of rape and another under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered against him at Sadar Police Station in Gurgaon.

Last Friday, two incidents of gang rapes of little girls were reported from Delhi. The incidents had reignited the debate on the age of juveniles and the role of police and the government in providing a safe environment to children being left at home by their working parents.

In Gurgaon case, the victim’s mother works as a maid in the nearby localities while her father does odd jobs for a livelihood. The family lives in a modest accommodation in Bengali Market area of Gurgaon’s South City. The victim and the accused are natives of Bengal.

“The incident came to light when the girl’s mother returned home from work around 3 p.m. and saw her daughter crying. The child revealed that she was bleeding,” said a senior police officer.

“She said that a local boy had lured her into an abandoned shanty in the locality by offering her Rs. 10 and something to eat. He raped her there before letting her go home,” said a woman at whose house the victim’s mother worked as a maid.

Her mother immediately took her out to look for the perpetrator. In no time, the girl pointed to a youth in the locality as her assaulter. The mother, however, did not confront the boy and instead approached the local police station.

The girl was taken for a medical examination which suggested that she had been sexually abused. According to locals, when the police reached the locality to apprehend the boy, his father begged the victim’s mother to forgive his son and even suggested a compromise.

The woman, however, was unrelenting upon which the police apprehended the boy.
