Three young men were killed when the motorcycle they were riding rammed into a light truck in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area on Thursday night.

The truck driver has been arrested while the vehicle has been impounded, said the police, adding that wearing helmets could have averted their death. The deceased — Nishant (20) Manish (19) and Yogesh (20) — were residents of localities in West Delhi. The three left for an outing on Pulsar motorcycle at about 10 p.m. on Thursday night and the accident took place on their way back, police said.

“When they reached ring road at Uttam Nagar, their motorcycle rammed into a light truck, which was coming from the wrong side. The impact was such that the bike was completely damaged as it entangled underneath the vehicle,” said a police officer. Witnesses told the police that all seemed to have died on the spot. One of them called the PCR and a PCR van rushed them to a nearby hospital where Manish and Yogesh were declared brought dead. Nishant, said the police, had died on the spot.

Even though the police have arrested the driver and booked him for causing death by negligence as well as rash and negligent driving, sources added that the victims were equally rash.

“None of the now deceased boys were wearing helmets and as per witnesses the bike must have been moving at a speed of about 90 kilometre per hour magnifying the impact of the collision,” said a police source.

“We are trying to get hold of a CCTV footage to ascertain the exact sequence of events,” said the officer.

Family members of the deceased were informed and the bodies were handed over to the family on Friday after post- mortem.
