Sunanda case: Tharoor allowed to travel to Geneva

To meet Kofi Annan’s family and seek aid for Kerala

A court here on Monday allowed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s plea to travel to Geneva to express condolences to the family of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and seek international aid for Kerala, which is reeling under unprecedented floods. Annan died on August 18.

Mr. Tharoor, who is currently on bail in a case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death almost four years ago in a hotel here, approached the court on Monday following an earlier direction that he will not leave the country without its permission. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate allowed the politician’s application after his counsel said Mr. Tharoor had worked under Annan for 10 years and was his “close friend and mentor” at the UN.
