The Delhi government is yet to deliver on its promise of appointing a Special Public Prosecutor in the 2008 Soumya Vishwanathan murder case despite assuring the parents of the slain TV journalist.
Her mother Madhavi has filed an online petition on www.change.org to build public consensus on the issue, even as sources close to the family expressed apprehensions about the continuing impasse between the Delhi government and the L-G of affecting yet another appointment which both must agree upon.
“We had met Chief Minster Arvind Kejriwal on May 21 and he was, without doubt, very helpful. Our only concern, however, is that time is of essence in the matter since the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for July 15 and 16,” Ms. Vishwanathan told The Hindu .
“Rajiv Mohan, who was connected with the case since the beginning, resigned from office in October and has since been involved in private practice. The government has written to him, requesting that he make his expertise available, but he is yet to respond,” she added.
On May 21, Mr. Kejriwal had also directed Home Minister Satyendra Jain to ensure the appointment of a Special Prosecutor. Mr. Jain, too, had met the family and told them that the Delhi government will bear the expenses of the Special Prosecutor. An official admitted that the appointment will require L-G’s nod.
