A 50-year-old security guard of a cash van was shot dead when unidentified assailants attempted to rob the van near Mayur Vihar toll plaza on Monday night, the police said on Tuesday.

Vishambhar Singh, who belonged to Uttar Pradesh’s Ramabai Nagar district, was employed with a private security agency in the Capital, the police said. He succumbed to injuries on Tuesday evening after being shot twice in the limbs.

The armed robbery attempt at Delhi-Noida-Delhi Flyway was reported around 11 p.m.. “Three persons, including the security guard, a driver and a custodian were coming from the firm’s Janakpuri branch and going to Noida. Custodian Sandeep reported the matter. The driver has been identified as Mahender Babu,” said a senior police officer.

The van had reached Mayur Vihar toll plaza when a few assailants in two cars overtook it and started firing. Sandeep allegedly told the police that Vishambhar immediately fired in retaliation.

Four rounds of firing

The robbers fired at least four rounds in Sandeep’s direction. Vishambhar not only saved Sandeep’s life by firing at the accused but also foiled the robbery, the police added. Following this, the robbers left one car at the spot and fled in the other.

The police control room was informed even as Vishambhar was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed after hours of treatment. The victim is survived by his wife and a son. They reside in Noida, the police said. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code have been registered. The police are scanning CCTV footage to identify and nab the robbers.
