Commuters travelling from Sarai Kale Khan to AIIMS after the opening of phase-II of the Barapullah elevated road on Saturday were likely to save 20 minutes of their travel time, the Delhi government’s Public Works Department (PWD) says.
Phase-II of the Barapullah elevated road, which has since been renamed Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Setu, was scheduled to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday evening.
Construction on the 2-km stretch from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium till INA Market was started in February 2013 and completed this month at an estimated cost of ₹530 crore, the PWD said.
Will ease traffic
Apart from the elevated road of 2 km over the Barapullah nullah, a ramp of 1 km for traffic coming from INA and going towards Ashram and Noida would also be opened, a PWD document stated. After missing many deadlines, phase-II of the road will extend the elevated corridor till Aurobindo Marg. The first phase of the elevated road had connected the 4-km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and was opened ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Also running late, the next phase of the road, phase-III, would extend the corridor till Mayur Vihar in east Delhi when completed. Construction on phase-III had started in 2015, but then ran into delays due to various issues, including land acquisition.
