A jewellery shop in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar was allegedly robbed of ornaments worth around ₹75 lakh by five men who arrived on bikes on Thursday. The shop’s owner, Pramod Kumar Jain (55), was held at gunpoint while the robbery was on. The police have registered a case and are looking for the culprits.

5 bike-borne men

Around 12 p.m., Mr. Jain was sitting in his shop with a worker when four men wearing helmets entered and asked him to part with the jewellery in the shop. “Five men had come on two bikes. While four of them entered the shop, one stood outside to keep a check. Two of them had pistols and the other two had knives,” Mr. Jain’s son Vaibhav, who was sitting at his office in the basement at the time of the incident, told The Hindu .

Mr. Vaibhav said that one of the men with a pistol told his father to keep mum or else he’ll have to face dire consequences. “The one with a pistol threatened to shoot my father if he screamed and then the other one came near the counter, put a knife near his throat and asked him to give them everything without a word,” he said.

‘Father was crying’

The four men, who had all come with white empty sacks, then allegedly put the gold and diamond jewellery in them and fled. “All this happened within 3-4 minutes,” said Mr. Vaibhav.

As soon as they left, Mr Parmod shouted for help after which Mr. Vaibhav and the other neighbours came in.

“When I reached, my father was crying and he told me everything. Our worker then called the police and then I also made a PCR call,” he said.

When asked if the CCTV footage of the shop was available, Mr. Vaibhav said that the CCTV camera wasn’t working.

However, the men’s movement has been captured in the cameras installed in other shops and houses adjacent to the shop.

“The footage clearly shows the men coming and leaving on their bikes, though their faces are not visible due to the helmets. It has been handed over to the police,” he said. The police have registered a case under Section 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) and have begun investigation.
