SDMC told to take appropriate steps

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to protect the drain crossing Najafgarh Road.

Following a plea by MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa claiming that the Shubhash Nagar drain in west Delhi was not being cleaned after it crosses Najafgarh Road, a Bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel said: “We direct the SDMC to take appropriate action for protection of the environment in relation to the drain in question.”

The panel also permitted the civic body to approach the monitoring committee that the Bench had constituted in July to oversee the cleaning of drains.

A panel comprising former Delhi Chief Secretary Shailaja Chandra and former NGT expert member B.S. Sajwan had been constituted to monitor compliance with orders of the NGT.
