Pregnant student: HC notice to DU

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought response from the Delhi University on plea of a second-year law student who has been detained in IV semester as she could not attend classes owing to her pregnancy.

A Bench issued the notice to the university after hearing the plea filed by Ankita Meena, in which she had challenged a single judge Bench order delivered last week dismissing her petition seeking relaxation in attendance.

Ms. Meena was represented by her advocates who contended that her case also raises fundamental questions relating to women equality before the law and the fundamental right of a woman to procreate. As per the petition, she is a regular law student studying in IV semester of the DU. She had an 86% attendance in III semester despite being pregnant at that time. During IV semester, she delivered a baby boy on February 2, 2018. On that account, she could not attend a part of her IV semester classes. On May 11, DU released revised list of detainees, who did not have 70% attendance which included Ms. Meena’s name.
