Data on garbage collection in South Delhi seems to stink, according to the Opposition Congress in the local civic body.
South Delhi Municipal Corporation Leader of the Opposition Farhad Suri said on Wednesday that the BJP-led civic body had inflated the figures of the amount of municipal solid waste collected.
When the Centre’s Swachh Bharat campaign was launched on October 2, the municipal corporations of Delhi went into overdrive to collect waste from the streets, abandoned plots and garbage dumps.
According to an official statement on October 7, the amount of solid waste collected by the SDMC had increased from 2,700 metric tonnes to 3,500 MT daily.
Speaking at a special Budget session of the House on Wednesday, Mr. Suri said the amount was actually 2,200 MT. “An additional commissioner has replied to my query about the amount of MSW collected, saying that the average has been 2,200 MT since the inception of the SDMC,” said Mr. Suri.
He added that the civic body gave inflated figures to members of the media to show that the Swachh Bharat campaign was working.
However, an SDMC official admitted that at its peak the garbage collection was 3,500 MT, but the average was around 2,500 MT. “The average over the years has been 2,400-2,500 MT, but it increased in October as we were picking up more construction and demolition waste,” said the official.
