A 35-year-old on-duty head constable was found dead in the VVIP parking lot at the Delhi Secretariat on Friday morning. Stating that they found a note addressed to the Delhi Police Commissioner, the police said he was upset over being beaten in public by his in-laws a day earlier.

The police control room received a call regarding Friday’s incident at 5.53 a.m. The caller told the police that the policeman had shot himself in the head with his service pistol. The victim’s nephew claimed his uncle had reported the thrashing to the Khajuri Khas police station SHO but was asked to “resolve” the issue instead.

The nephew said, “Despite being a policeman, he was made to wait for around eight hours at Khajuri Khas police station. After the long wait, the SHO asked him to resolve the issue amicably and his complaint was not registered. He called me and narrated his ordeal. He sounded upset.”

The victim’s note mentioned that he had strained relations with his in-laws and wife, who also works with the Delhi Police. He also made accusations against his brother-in-law, a head constable with Uttar Pradesh police, and another relative. He claimed his in-laws had filmed Thursday assault.

The victim’s nephew claimed that differences between the couple started arising within a few months of their marriage nearly six years ago. He said relations between his uncle and aunt worsened steadily over the years.

A senior police officer said a case has been registered at IP Estate police station under charges of abetment to suicide and that a probe is on.

He added: “We have ordered an inquiry against the Khajuri Khas police station staff over the allegations made by the victim’s family members.”
