Consumers can now buy water meter of their choice from the open market rather than relying on the Delhi Jal Board to install them.
The DJB announced on Thursday that meters that comply with the Bureau of Indian Standards and IP 68 guidelines can be purchased and installed, though consumers can still get the water utility to replace non-functional meters.
The DJB said it will give a seven-year guarantee as opposed to the five years’ given in the market. “This decision has been taken not only to expedite the process of installation of quality water meters but also to facilitate the consumers to avail the facility of 20-KL free water at the earliest possible,” said a DJB statement.
Officials said the meters are tamper, leak and dust proof, and also have an alarm in case of overflow or tampering. Currently, the DJB has 21.19 lakh connections through its piped network of 14,132 km.
