No new taxes in east Delhi

No new taxes will be introduced by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), the chairperson of the civic body’s standing committee clarified on Tuesday — the first day of discussion on the budget in the House.

In December, the civic body commissioner at the time, Puneet Goel, had proposed three new taxes to help increase revenue in the cash-strapped municipality. These included an education cess of 5% as part of the property tax; a betterment tax of 15%, meant to be in lieu of improvement in the value of the land as a consequence of various developmental of the corporation; and a professional tax, charged on incomes of residents.

The betterment tax and professional tax was also proposed by the commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and have been recommended by various finance commissions to improve the financial position of the corporations.
