The Delhi government on Monday sought to allay apprehensions over the XE variant of the COVID-19 virus, amid reports of its outbreak in some foreign countries.

“There is no need to panic over the XE variant of COVID-19,” said Health Minister Satyendar Jain.

He said new variants of the virus are being discovered around the world almost every other day and many more will emerge.  “The XE variant has not been classified as a variant of concern by the WHO [World Health Organization], which means it is not a threat yet,” said the Minister.

On the COVID-19 cases in Delhi, Mr. Jain said the government is closely monitoring the situation and there is no need to focus on the infection rate at the moment, as the number of hospital admissions is decreasing and the total daily cases is between 100 and 200.

“Cases have gone down substantially and hospital admissions have also declined. We have to understand that COVID is here to stay and we have to learn to live with it and make changes to our policies accordingly,” the Minister said.

He urged the people to follow rules and precautions related to COVID-19 as that is the only way to prevent the virus from spreading.
