NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of police inaction

June 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports that a minor girl, who resided at Shastri Park in East Delhi, was kidnapped and forced to marry recently even as the police did not take any action in the matter.

The accused persons, who kidnapped the girl while she was on the way to school, allegedly continue to threaten her family. In particular, they threatened her father with dire consequences if he tries to secure her freedom.

Even a month after the first information report was lodged based on a complaint by the girl’s father, the police have so far not taken any action against the alleged kidnappers.

The Commission observed that the contents of the reports, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. It has issued a notice to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East Delhi) calling for a report in the matter within two weeks.

It has also asked the DCP (North-East) to inform it of the steps taken for protection of the victim’s family.
