Following a plea alleging pollution in Ghaziabad due to non-functional sewage treatment plants, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a committee comprising officials from the Central Pollution Control Board and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to look into the issue.

Directing the committee to furnish a report, a Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said, “Let a joint committee comprising CPCB, UPPCB, District Magistrate, Ghaziabad furnish a factual and action-taken report in the matter within one month.”

STPs malfunctioned

The directions came when the green panel was hearing a plea moved by Hindon River Resorts Pvt. Ltd. (and) others against the Ghaziabad Development Authority. The plea had alleged that three STPs at Indirapuram had malfunctioned causing pollution.

“The plants are being managed by the GDA, UP Jal Nigam and Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam. The sewage is overflowing due to obstruction and dumping of garbage by scrap dealers on the side lanes of the open drains and due to encroachment by high rise complex and shops,” the Bench observed while noting the allegations in the plea.

The tribunal directed the State pollution control board to be the nodal agency for compliance and coordination of the orders.
