Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Navy to enable the Navy personnel to take lateral entry in various academic courses offered by the varsity.
The university had in August this year worked out a similar arrangement with the Air Force.
University officials said that under the MoU, JMI will recognise in-service training provided to the Navy personnel during their years in service and based on that they will provide credits to them. The admission to courses would be through the centre for distance and open learning and will lead to awarding of degrees on fulfilment of statutory requirements.
“We have entered into this collaboration with the Navy keeping in mind the future of personnel who enter service at a very young age and superannuate in their early thirties. This will give them an opportunity to begin second-innings of active service,” Jamia Spokesperson Mukesh Ranjan said.
“This will help in the technical advancement and progression of Indian Navy personnel and officers,” he added.
“The Indian Navy conducts in-service training programmes for its personnel at training centres across the country. The recognition of that training and courses following credit determination would make the officers eligible for admission in JMI for various academic programmes,” he said.
Jamia would appoint a Joint-Equivalence Committee for credit determination for all theoretical and practical components of academic-cum-training programmes in the Navy.
The university will start enrolling officers in its various courses starting from the next academic year. Personnel who are interested in applying can start the procedure in April next year. In near future, the varsity officials are also planning to explore the opportunity to undertake joint collaborative projects that would enable Indian Navy to share its expertise and technical knowledge with Jamia students, a university official informed.
