Municipalities to assign unique IDs to toilets

People can register complaints via app, toll free numbers

Cleaner and well maintained toilets will soon be a reality for the residents of north and east Delhi. The North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations will soon start providing toilets under their jurisdiction with a unique identification number, which will make redressal of complaints.

A north corporation official said that many complaints of dirty toilets are reported by the public but it becomes difficult to identify them as there are many toilet complexes in a particular locality.

“The plan is to launch a mobile application which would be linked to all the toilets registered in our area. People can register their complaints via this app or also get in touch with us through WhatsApp and also our toll free number,” the official said.

He explained that each ward will have a code number, which will be attached to the unique identification number. For example: The area code for Bhalswa is 120, then all toilets in Bhalswa will start with 120 and will be followed by the unique number of each toilet.

The plan, however, is only in the pipeline. The EDMC too has floated the proposal and is likely to present it before the Standing Committee in the next meeting. After that, the process of counting and numbering the toilets will begin. This process is likely to take around three months. The municipalities said that the east civic body maintains 521 toilets, and the north corporation maintains 1,031 toilets. Officials said the mobile app will also let the complainant submit pictures of the toilet.

Ensure accountability

The two corporations also plan to depute a supervisor for each toilet. Their phone numbers and other details will be mentioned on the toilet complex. This will ensure accountability as for all cases of repeated complaints the supervisor will be held.“People can also directly call the supervisors in their area if the toilets are not cleaned, and they will need to ensure that the cleaning happens within 24 hours,” an EDMC official said.
