Mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa, who was attempting to set a record for climbing Mount Everest twice in one week, returned to New Delhi on Friday evening after being stranded on the mountain since the April 25 earthquake.
Ms. Jamsenpa, who hails from Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh, has already scaled the world’s tallest mountain thrice. Her latest expedition was flagged off from Itanagar on April 7 and she left from Kathmandu for the Everest base camp on April 14 to attempt a double ascent.
During a press conference organised at Arunachal Bhawan here on Saturday, Ms. Jamsenpa said her team was trekking about 500 metre below the base camp when the massive quake hit Nepal.
The base camp was destroyed and 18 mountaineers lost their lives when the tremors set off avalanches, she said. Ms. Jamsenpa added: “I came to know about the scale of the devastation when I saw Kathmandu.”
