In a suspected case of honour killing, a minor girl and a Haryana Police Sub-Inspector were shot dead by unidentified men outside Rohtak’s mini-Secretariat on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old girl was being escorted by a police team, including Sub-Inspector Narender Kumar, to a Rohtak court to depose in a case of forgery when two unidentified men on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire around 3 p.m.

Mr. Kumar returned fire but sustained bullet injuries. Both were declared brought dead at a city hospital. Constable Sushila, who was also accompanying the girl, managed to escape unhurt.

The girl, who belongs to the Jat community, had eloped with Sombir, a Dalit, on August 24 last year.

The girl’s father lodged a complaint against Sombir at the Rohtak City police station based on which an abduction case was registered.

Sombir later allegedly forged documents to show that the girl was an adult and the two got married. The girl’s family, however, produced original certificates to prove that she was a minor. Sombir was then arrested on charges of forgery and sent to jail.

The girl, however, refused to go back to her parents and was sent to Nari Niketan in Karnal. The girl's father had adopted her from his brother-in-law in 2002.

Sombir is a resident of Bada Singhpura village.

Superintendent of Police (Rohtak) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said that an FIR has been lodged and the girl’s family was the prime suspect. A few people have been detained and are being questioned.
