Three batches of medical students will benefit over the coming years from a medical college that will be constructed using ‘pre-fabricated structures’. Attached to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini, work on the permanent structure is progressing nearby. The project was given the go ahead on Tuesday by the Delhi Government’s Expenditure Finance Committee and sanctioned nearly Rs.30 crore for the construction of a temporary structure.
The Delhi Government on Tuesday decided to construct this temporary medical college, which will provide infrastructure for an additional 100 MBBS seats in a year to boost medical education in Delhi.
The pre-construction work is expected to be completed by March 2015 and Health Department officials say that by the time the permanent construction is completed at least three batches of 100 students each would have benefited from this structure.
“Approval for construction of medical college under temporary structure will help the Health Department in filing formal application as per the Medical Council of India norms. The experience of other States, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, ESI and others has shown that colleges are started in temporary structures and then moved to permanent structure with the passage of time,” said an official.
With the temporary structure having a shelf-life of 20 years, the site for the project has been identified without causing any impediment to the construction of a permanent building. Once the permanent medical college will be built, the pre-fabricated structure will be used for low-end facilities such as laboratories and storage facilities.
