May Day gift for part-time safai karamcharis

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Almost 200 sanitation workers employed by health institutions of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation were promoted on Friday, from part-timers to regular daily wagers.

While the 174 beneficiaries are far from becoming regular employees, their salaries will go up from Rs.1,500-Rs.2,000 per month to Rs.8,000-9,000 per month.

However, how the cash-strapped municipality will pay the increased wages is unclear. The corporation will have to shell out Rs.1.71 crore on the salaries of these safai karamcharis, whereas the current expense was Rs.32.25 lakh. The North Corporation has been undergoing a financial crisis and has been unable to pay salaries on time for months now.
