A 25-year-old man’s genitals were chopped off allegedly by his friend on suspicion of mobile theft in Central Delhi’s Jama Masjid on May 16, the police said on Saturday, adding that the accused has been arrested.
DCP (Cental) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said that the accused, Qaleem, worked as a labourer in Old Delhi, from Bihar’s Darbhanga. The victim has been identified as Rizwan, from the same district who worked as labourers in Meena Bazaar, he added.
They lived together in the same rented accommodation near Jama Masjid and about 10 days ago, Qaleem’s phone was found missing from the room. “He suspected Rizwan had stolen his phone,” a police officer said. After Rizwan denied any knowledge about the phone, Qaleem threatened him with dire consequences.
On Wednesday, the accused came to Rizwan’s work place in a drunken state. “He was sleeping when Qaleem took out a knife and mutilated his private parts. Rizwan woke up in pain and started shouting for help. Qaleem fled the spot,” the officer said. The accused then wrapped the chopped private parts in a paper along with the knife and rushed to his work place’s godown to hide them. Meanwhile, Rizwan was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital from where he was discharged after two days, the police said. The DCP said a case under Section 336 (act of endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC has been registered. Qaleem was arrested the same day and later sent to judicial custody, he added.
