Five persons have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a man and extorting money from his cousin in Safdarjung Enclave, the police said on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya said that Kartik Monga (19), Devender (24), Mukesh Verma (22), Pawan Kumar (35) and Yogendra (32) have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping Nitin, and extorting money from his cousin Rajeev Saini.

The police received a call from Mr. Rajeev around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. He said he was getting extortion calls. The caller claimed to have kidnapped his cousin Nitin. They allegedly demanded a ransom of ₹2 lakh. “They threatened Mr. Rajeev of dire consequences if he approached the police,” Mr. Baaniya said.

Mr. Rajeev told the police that Mr. Nitin was with him on Thursday evening before he left with a friend and did not return. Based on his complaint, the police filed a case and began a probe.

The caller allegedly asked Mr. Rajeev to hand over the money near Chhatarpur metro station but when he reached, he was asked to come to another place.

“When Mr. Rajeev reached the designated place and handed over the money to a person who was waiting there, the police apprehended him. He was later identified as Kartik Monga,” Mr. Baaniya said.

Four others were later arrested and ₹1 lakh was recovered at Monga’s instance

It was also revealed that Monga knew Nitin and the two had a monetary dispute between them.
