A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife with the help of his parents after she gave birth to a second daughter and could not fulfil her in-laws’ demands for dowry, the police said on Monday
The accused has been identified as Amit Bhati (28), a resident of Sirsa. The police said he married Chanchal (26), a resident of Haryana’s Palwal, in November 2011. The couple have two daughters — aged six years and nine months. Amit and his father work as administrative officials at a private educational institute in Greater Noida.
Around 6 a.m. on October 20, Chanchal’s father Vinod Kumar received a phone call from a relative, who told him that his daughter had died in the morning and that her in-laws were performing the last rites. “Amit and his family did not inform me about my daughter’s death. I rushed to Greater Noida. I also reported the matter to the police and requested them to intervene and stop her in-laws from cremating my daughter. They had been torturing her for ₹5 lakh and a car since the day she had given birth to her second daughter,” Mr. Kumar said.
Chanchal’s family also alleged that the accused blamed her for giving birth to a girl child and threatened her saying they would kill her if she gave birth to a daughter again.
The police reached the crematorium and talked to Amit and his family. The husband and the family claimed that Amit had found Chanchal dead when he woke up around 5 a.m. that day.
Mr. Kumar then filed a complaint, following which an FIR was lodged against Amit and his parents under IPC Sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 304B (dowry death) and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Amit was arrested on the same day and is currently in judicial custody. The exact cause of death has not been ascertained yet.
