The West District Police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly murdering a senior citizen and decamping with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from her house in Punjabi Bagh on Monday.

Sulochna Devi (62) was found brutally murdered at her house on Monday morning.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said the accused Anurag Jain had suffered heavy losses in his business.

“During interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime. Anurag got to know that the Bansal family is financially strong. For about one week, he studied the house and planed the robbery,” said Mr. Kumar.

Mr. Kumar said that on Monday around 6-30 a.m., Anurag scaled the boundary wall of the C-Block house in Shivaji Park where the victim lived.

Sulochna Devi noticed him on the first floor and raised an alarm before giving him a chase.

“He rushed back to the ground floor where the victim tried to get hold of him. He attacked her with a knife. After a few stabs, the knife broke. He took out another knife and attacked her. Finally, he used the chopper and murdered her,” said Mr. Kumar.
