A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his student in north-east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar, the police said on Saturday.

DCP Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Ved Prakash Surya said that Naushad Ali (35) and his brother-in-law Rafiq alias Samir (28) had dumped the body in a drain.

On September 29, at 7.45 a.m., a PCR call was received regarding a body found floating in a drain near Sardar Patel School, the police said. On reaching the spot, the police took the decomposed body of a woman aged around 25 years to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for post-mortem. A case on charges of murder and causing the disappearance of evidence was registered, an officer said.

During investigation, the police tried to identify the woman for which door to door survey was conducted in the area and informers were deployed.

On October 2, the woman was identified as a 24-year-old resident of Shastri Park and was reported missing from her residence since September 26. The family also identified the body.

“When the victim’s call detail records were examined, Naushad who lived nearby, came out as the prime suspect and was picked up for questioning,” Mr. Surya said.

He then confessed to the crime, the police added.

‘Victim wanted to marry’

“The accused said he runs a tuition centre and the woman was his student since Class 10. After completing her studies, she also joined the centre. The two were in a relationship but she was feeling ignored. The accused said she wanted to marry him and they had constant fights after which he decided to kill her,” Mr. Surya said.

A senior officer said on September 26 at 7 p.m., the woman came to the centre and an argument ensued between the two after which he hit her with a blunt object and she became unconscious. Thinking she had died, he put her body in a sack and kept it in the centre.

On September 27, which was Naushad’s birthday, the accused stepped out of the centre to celebrate.

“He then called Rafiq and narrated the incident to him. He asked Rafiq to help with dumping the body who then brought a vehicle after which the two dumped the body in the drain on September 27,” the officer said.

Next, Naushad celebrated his birthday and even accepted wishes. Sources said Naushad was engaged to be married to one of his students and did not want to be with the victim.
