Man beaten to death in CP

A 40-year-old courier company owner was bludgeoned to death by three men below his office in the heart of the Capital’s commercial district late on Tuesday evening. Injuries, inflicted by helmets and rods, are understood to have led to his death.

Identified as Biju Verghese, a native of Kerala’s Kottayam district, the victim was scheduled to leave for his ancestral house for a family function on Wednesday. A police source said Verghese was suspected to have been murdered by two of his disgruntled employees whom he had recently terminated from service for alleged inefficiency. Those accused of having perpetrated the incident have been identified and are expected to be apprehended soon.

“Personal enmity seems to have triggered the incident; the identity of the accused cannot be revealed at the moment in the interests of ongoing investigation,” said a senior police officer.

The victim operated the Express Courier Company for the last eight years.

“The murder was witnessed by Verghese’s two employees, John and Vijender. The two serve as field boys with the company. They rushed out of their office upon hearing loud quarrelling sounds. When they emerged, they found Verghese being thrashed by three men,” said the officer.

John tried to intervene, but he was pushed away and threatened.

One of the assailants then snatched Verghese’s helmet from his hand and repeatedly assaulted him on his head with it. The assault led to Varghese collapsing as the assailants fled on a motorcycle.
