Army Major Nikhil Rai Handa, the accused in Shailza Dwivedi murder case stabbed the latter as soon as he hung up on his wife following a heated argument that continued for around 10 minutes, said a police officer on Monday.

The police said that Major Handa and the deceased roamed in Delhi Cantonment in a car for two hours before she was murdered and dumped on the road. Major Handa had got out of the car to make a call to his wife. He then got inside the car and put his mobile phone on the speaker mode. He had an argument with his wife. The telephonic conversation lasted for around 10 minutes. Shailza remained silent throughout. However, as soon as the conversation with his wife ended, Major Handa stabbed Shailza with a knife.

“He was trying to convince Shailza that he hated his wife and wanted to be with her. It seems that he was obsessed with Shailza. After she was stabbed on the neck, she tried to run out of the car but collapsed near the front bumper of the vehicle. Major Handa, however, did not come out of his car and ran over her instead,” said a police officer.

On his way home in Saket, Major Handa smashed Shailza’s mobile phone with a brick and dumped it in a garbage bin. “The mobile phone has been recovered. The owner has been identified based on details provided by the mobile phone manufacturer and service provider,” said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar.

Mr. Kumar said that during interrogation, Major Handa was asked about the bloodstained clothes and the weapon used in the crime. He said that he had burnt all the clothes near the garbage bin. We checked with local civic body staff, who said the garbage bin has not been cleaned for past two days and no traces of burnt clothes were found.

“The Swiss knife recovered from Mr. Handa’s car had bloodstains on it. It has been sent to the forensic lab for examination. Samples have also been collected from the car. The bloodstained towel and clothes are yet to be recovered,” Mr. Kumar also said.

“After committing the murder he switched off one of the two mobile phones he used to carry. He was in touch with his family members via WhatsApp on the other phone. He had, however, already deleted WhatsApp backup data from google drive as well as the application from his phone by the time he got arrested. We have sent a request to google for the retrieval of the deleted data,” Mr. Kumar also said.
