Welcoming students on their first day of college on Tuesday, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice-Chancellor Najma Akthar told freshers that there would be “zero tolerance”on gender injustice, eve-teasing and sexual harassment on campus.

“All students, especially girl students, should not only feel protected but also enjoy a sense of freedom on the campus,” she said.

Wishing them a fruitful academic session ahead, the V-C said that the university was continuously climbing the national and international rankings because of its academic and research activities and a peaceful and positive environment on the campus.

“Let JMI students be known for their ‘tehzeeb’ and etiquette and also for learning with 75% attendance,” she said.

She asked students to maintain and promote a good environment and not to indulge in any activity that could harm the reputation of the 100-year-old institution.

Addressing the limited accommodation available on the campus, Ms. Akhtar said that JMI was trying its best to create more hostel accommodations and as of now, hostels were only allotted to the deserving students on the basis of merit
