The Delhi Government will amend the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, by making provision for stringent punishment for employers for non-payment of minimum wages to the workers. The amendment will be brought in the Vidhan Sabha session scheduled for next month.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made the announcement while launching the Shramik Vikas Mission, marking the International Labour Day, here on Friday. Mr. Kejriwal said his government would give priority to the working class by providing them basic facilities such as easy access in government hospitals and opening new dispensaries and schools for proper education for their children.
The Shramik Vikas Mission focuses on strict action against employers for non-payment of minimum wages to workers, enhancement of financial entitlements under various welfare schemes for construction workers and pension benefit for unorganised workers under the Delhi Swavalamban Yojana.
Labour Minister Gopal Rai, Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly Bandana Kuamri and several MLAs were present on the occasion. Mr. Kejriwal said the hard work and dedication of workers needed to be recognised, as it plays an important role in economic development and infrastructure growth of the Capital.
The Chief Minister said his government would provide pucca houses to all jhuggi dwellers within the next five years and take up the matter with the Railway Ministry and Delhi Development Authority for not removing jhuggis from different areas of the Capital.
He also announced that each office of Deputy Labour Commissioner would have a reception house for workers.
