A woman journalist, working with the web portal of an English daily, allegedly leapt to death from the fifth floor of a building in Sector 46 here on Sunday night.

A friend of the deceased and a police-inspector-friend were also present in the flat when she took the extreme step.

Hailing from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Puja Tiwari stayed alone in a rented room in Town Number-5. Her friend Amreen Khan had also come to stay with her on April 22. Amreen had come from Indore in search of a job.

Twenty-eight-year-old Puja Tiwari, her friend Amreen and a Haryana police inspector Amit Kumar were present in her room when the incident took place on May 1.

Amreen told the police that the three had a long chat after which she went to sleep. Puja, allegedly in an inebriated state, went to the balcony of the room and jumped off the building.

Amit told the police that he tried to prevent Puja from taking the extreme step, but she managed to jump off.

Station House Officer (Surajkund Police Station) Rajender Singh said that Amit was a family friend of the journalist and had been to her house in Indore as well on several occasions.

Though no suicide note has been found, the police said that Puja was facing extortion charges and was stressed.

“Puja had carried out a sting operation on a local doctor for allegedly conducting sex determination tests for her news portal. But, the doctor lodged a complaint with the police saying that she had been demanding Rs.2 lakh from him. An FIR was also registered in this connection. She was also suspended from her job following the registration of the case and was stressed,” said Mr. Singh.

The police said her family had been informed about the incident and the body was sent for post-mortem.
