The Delhi Police on Tuesday said Jawaharlal Nehru University research scholar J. Muthukrishnan appeared to have hanged himself using a blanket at a friend's room on the campus on Monday, The reason for taking the extreme step, however, is yet to be known as a suicide note has not been found.
South Delhi DCP Ishwar Singh on Tuesday termed the death an "unfortunate incident." Gomen Kim, a South Korean national, and two other students — Lakshyajeet and Issac — broke open the door of Gomen's room around 5 p.m. and found ''Krish'' hanging, Mr. Singh told journalists.
"We searched the room but no suicide note was found. We went to his hotel room but did not find anything there either. We will make forensic teams search the rooms again," Mr. Singh said.
When asked about reports drawing parallel to suicide of Rohit Vemula, he said: "We don't know about his association with Rohith Vemula or with any other student group. He neither made any complaint to the university administration nor was there any complaint against them."
The police are also going through Muthukrishnan's Facebook posts and intend to access his call records.
Muthukrishnan's roommate Amritanshu told them that he had not spoken to the former on the day of the incident. "We came to know that he [Muthukrishnan] was disturbed, but so far Amritanshu has not told us anything to suggest what worried him," Mr. Singh said.
The police have sought a post mortem of Muthukrishnan's body and would speak to his parents as part of the probe, he said.
