Motorists using outer ring road between Janakpuri and Wazirabad are likely to get some relief from traffic snarls as the Delhi government plans to make the corridor signal-free from December 31.
The delayed project has four components that involve construction of four flyovers at different intersections — Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh elevated corridor; Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk elevated corridor; Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk elevated corridor; and Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad signal-free project. The project was expected to be completed by the middle of 2015, but got delayed due to reasons such as land acquisition, environment concerns, encroachments, and funding.
Besides, the felling of tress came up as a hurdle after a restriction on the project was imposed by the National Green Tribunal.
The nearly 25-km corridor is one of the most ambitious road projects of the Capital. The work started in April 2013, but even till the middle of 2015, less than half of the construction was completed. However, after facing many roadblocks, the Public Works Department changed the deadline for the project from May 2015 to December 2015. The project cost of the entire corridor is around Rs. 3,000 crore.
“The stretch will be signal-free by December 31. We are also in the process of ensuring the plying of a fleet of high-speed buses on this stretch and other arterial roads connected to ring road and outer ring road,” said Satyendra Jain, PWD Minister. According to sources, there are plans to connect the Janakpuri-Wazirabad signal-free corridor with the Signature Bridge.
