Ittefaq team gets notice for ‘promoting smoking’

The Delhi Health Department has issued a strict compliance notice to Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan, Gauri Khan and others for promoting smoking in promotional posters of their film Ittefaq . One of the posters of the film shows actor Akshaye Khanna lighting a cigarette.

“This promotional material poster of the film being publicised in media is in gross violation of Section 5 of COTPA ( Cigarette & Other Tobacco Products Act) 2003 as it promotes smoking,” the department noted.

Additional Director (Health), Tobacco Control Department, S.K. Arora said: “The director, producer, actor, distributor and promoters of this film, along with the editors of various news agencies/other media, are liable to be prosecuted”.

Affect on youth

The department said around 10 lakh people lose their lives every year due to tobacco use. “5,500 youth in India consume tobacco daily and Bollywood films have a lasting effects on youths,” the Department said, while instructing the group to withdraw the ads.
