The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the response of the Union Government and Delhi Government on a public interest writ petition alleging that illegal firearms were coming in large numbers from other States to the Capital. The petition, filed by a non-government organisation, Paardarshita Public Welfare Foundation, said fake arms licences were being issued in north-eastern States.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw, hearing the matter, sought to know the procedure or law under which the residents of Delhi could keep the arms issued on licence from other States.

The Court asked the Government agencies to file an affidavit on the issue within four weeks. The petitioner requested the Court to issue directions for seizure of illegal arms and ammunition and for appropriate legal action against those involved in the issuance of arms licences to the residents of Delhi, National Capital Region and other parts of the country.

The Bench also asked Paardarshita Public Welfare Foundation to file an affidavit containing additional material to support its allegations before March 11, when the case will come up for further hearing.
