Heinous crimes register a marginal fall

However, cases of molestation, attempt to murder and snatchings have climbed up

Heinous crimes like rape, murder and dacoity in the Capital have registered a fall in the last five months compared to the corresponding period last year, according to latest data from Delhi Police.

This year, 820 rapes were reported in the Capital till May 30, just one shy of 821 last year.

When it comes to murders, considered the yardstick of crime in a city, the police registered 226 cases under Section 302 IPC so far against 235 in the corresponding period last year.

As for dacoity, 36 cases were lodged till May 31 this year, compared to 41 last year.

However, cases of molestation continue to rise from 1,590 last year to 1,947 this year in the same period.

The number of attempt to murder cases too registered a marginal hike from 264 in 2014 to 289 this year. Snatchings also climbed up from 3,093 last year to 3,838 in 2015.

If one looks at the last two years’ statistics, every crime head had registered a steady increase in all the heads. In 2014, 2,069 rape cases were reported as compared to 1,636 cases in the corresponding period of 2013.

Also, 4,322 cases of molestation of women were reported in 2014 while in 2013 the number stood at 3,515.
