The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday alleged that BJP’s North West Delhi candidate Hans Raj Hans had converted to Islam and can’t fight from a reserved seat and they will move court to disqualify Mr. Hans. The BJP denied the allegation and demanded an apology from AAP.

“The BJP has given ticket to a person who is not from a reserved category. He has hidden many facts. On February 20, 2014, he converted to Islam. He converted to Mohammad Yusuf. He had also told that he converted his religion, but he will continue to sing under the same name,” Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said while addressing a press conference on Thursday.

‘Spreading lies’

“As per law, he is not a Scheduled Caste and can’t fight from a SC seat. He has hid the truth and our legal team will move court to disqualify him,” he added.

Responding to the allegations, BJP senior leader Vijay Goel, said, “From the time he was born to till now, Hans Raj Hans is a ‘Valmiki’ and he has an SC certificate. People who are jealous of his popularity and since he sings Sufi, they are spreading lies. Those who have made the accusation should apologise.”

Later in the day, AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “Hans Raj Hans is ineligible to fight from a reserved seat. He will finally be declared ineligible. Voters from North West Delhi shud not waste their votes on him.”

This is the third BJP candidate who is being attacked by Mr. Kejriwal and AAP. Earlier, Mr. Kejriwal had asked people to not vote for BJP’s East Delhi candidate Gautam Gambhir stating that he will be disqualified for possessing two voter ID cards.

The AAP had attacked BJP’s South Delhi candidate Ramesh Bidhuri stating that he had not mentioned about an FIR against him at the time of filing his nomination and he would be disqualified.
