A gym trainer at Eros City Square in Sector 49 here was killed and his colleague sustained grievous injuries after they fell down 30 feet into the basement of the shopping mall through a ventilator on the ground floor during a scuffle on Wednesday.

The police have registered a case on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Second basement

According to the police, Anil (26) and Praveen (22) were involved in a scuffle over some issue after the closure of the gym, Play Fitness, around 10 p.m. and were pushing each other around when they landed on the second basement crashing through the aluminium ventilator mesh on the ground floor in the rear of the shopping mall.

The staff of the gym accompanying them took them to Artemis Hospital where Anil, a resident of Chhatarpur in Delhi, was declared dead. Praveen who belongs to Akleempur village in Gurugram sustained serious injuries.

When Praveen’s mother called on his phone around 11 p.m. after he did not return home, one of his colleagues answered the call and told her about the incident.

Praveen’s cousin Deepak said that he had fractured his jaw, left leg and hip. “The doctors have suggested three-four major surgeries over the next few days. He is critical and unable to speak,” said Deepak.

He added it would not be easy for him even if he survived as it might take him several years to walk on his own.

Anil is survived by his wife and three children. Praveen has two younger sisters and a mother. Praveen’s father had gone missing when he is just eight. He was the sole breadwinner of the family.

‘Friendly manner’

Praveen’s relatives claimed that the two were pushing around in each other in a friendly manner when they hit the mesh and fell into the basement.

A security guard at the mall claimed that Anil was the first to fall through the ventilator after he hit the mesh and then Praveen also slipped in a bid to save him.

The two men had been working at the gym for the past one year.
