The ‘rice bucket challenge’ started by a woman in Hyderabad on the lines of the ‘ice bucket challenge’ was taken up on Tuesday by German Ambassador Michael Steiner.
He visited 392 families of Vivekanand Camp in Chanakyapuri and presented each family with a 5 kg bucket of rice.
After distributing buckets of rice, Ambassador Steiner said: “Unfortunately, our society still accepts poverty as unavoidable – we have to change that!” He spoke about slum upgrading projects being funded by Germany in India and said the German Government supports numerous Indian citizens’ striving to improve their lives with over Rs.8,000 crore annually.
The German Ambassador also provided funds for basic health care for flood victims in Kashmir through a hospital in Baramulla.
