Frame rules on using parks for events: NGT

Taking note of a letter by a city resident who has alleged that a park in Sundar Nagar is being “misused for organising events”, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday constituted a joint committee to submit a detailed report on the matter.

A Bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said: “There is a need to assess the carrying capacity of the area to sustain such events in respect of number of vehicles, generation and disposal of municipal solid waste, safety hazards, noise pollution, emergency response… to be permitted in particular colonies and to regulate such events being held in any public parks, consistent with the environment norms.”

The Bench said that the joint committee will comprise representatives of the Central Pollution Control Board, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Delhi Police Commissioner.

The letter moved by city resident Rakesh Tihara said that the ‘Ornamental Park’ in Sundar Nagar was being used illegally in “disregard of environmental norms”.

“There is illegal use of diesel generators, non-compliance of solid waste management rules, illegal parking takes place, leading to noise pollution and traffic jams,” the plea said.

Authorities have been directed to submit the report by January 31, 2019.
