The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) presented its budget for 2018-19, laying focus on education and skill development, especially for girls. The council announced the formation of an Under-10 football team for female students.
While presenting the budget at the NDMC Convention Centre, chairperson Naresh Kumar said the council has proposed to form football teams at Navyug School, Sarojini Nagar; NP Co-Ed Senior Secondary School, Lodhi Road; and NP Bengali Girls Senior Secondary School, Gole Market; to inculcate a culture of sports among girls. All three schools have football fields, which will be utilised for their training.
“Over 100 girls will be selected and we will provide free coaching, sports kits and physical training...,” Mr. Kumar said.
100-bed hostel
He said the NDMC will also take care of the diet of the selected students so that all aspects affecting their game are taken care of.
The council also announced construction of a 100-bed hostel, attached with Navyug Girls International School. This facility will be available exclusively for daughters of paramilitary personnel who have died in the line of duty. All expenses of boarding, education and other facilities are also proposed to be borne by the NDMC.
“We have also proposed installation of sanitary napkin vending machines in each school for convenience of female students. These will be provided free of cost. By the end of the year, all schools will have such vending machines,” the chairperson said.
The NDMC announced projects to enable better educational facilities for its students. Save for a few firsts, the others have been repacked from last year. Mr. Kumar announced the setting up of Atal Tinkering Labs in schools.
The council has also proposed training and skill development of teachers. Setting up of teachers’ resource centres, fellowships and training programmes are all part of this budget.
Mr. Kumar said the NDMC will also concentrate on strengthening infrastructure at hospitals and primary healthcare units under the council. Compared to 2016, footfall at the Charak Palika Hospital in Nanakpura had increased by at least 20%, he added.
The proposal for e-hospitals has also been kicked off. Under this, all data regarding health facilities offered by the NDMC is made available via a centralised website and also on the mobile phone of users.
The NDMC has also devised a way to end the menace of unauthorised generators fit behind shops in Connaught Place. Mr. Kumar said the NDMC has as a pilot project fit a switch over the system in shops which will enable no power disruption in the market unless there is a major power failure. Through this system, no generators will be required in the market, he said. The NDMC has also proposed construction of stack parking lots in Khan Market and Connaught Place, which will solve the perennial problem of parking space in the city.
