A five-year-old girl child was subjected to sexual assault and left by the alleged perpetrator at a railway yard on Wednesday.
Later ascertained to be the daughter of a vagabond, the victim was discovered by some passersby at a train yard at the Old Delhi Railway Station in North Delhi around 11:30 am.
Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), said several teams had been formed to trace and apprehend the accused — who is also a vagabond from the area — and promised swift arrests in the case. Meanwhile, the victim’s condition is understood to be stable, but serious at a city hospital.
“A police team was rushed to the spot and she was taken for a medical examination which confirmed sexual assault. Prima facie investigation suggests that she was sexually assaulted elsewhere before being abandoned at the spot from where she was recovered,” said a senior police officer. Her parents were informed about the incident following her admission to the hospital and are understood to have provided clues which helped investigators zero-in on a known vagabond.
Initially suspected to be a minor, further investigation helped the police ascertain that the accused was an adult.
