According to the Economic Survey, tabled in the Delhi Assembly on Saturday, there has been a decrease in the number of students in technical institutes in Delhi as compared to 2016-17.
While in 2017-18 there was an increase to 31,251 from 34,168, in 2018-19 it dipped to 31,924. The trend is despite a rise in the number of technical institutes in the Capital, with 104 in 2016-17 to 110 in 2018-19.
Additionally, despite an increased budget allocation and an increase in the number of classrooms, enrolment in Delhi government schools have seen a 3% dip, according to the Economic Survey, placed on Saturday.
While in the 2016-17 period, enrolment in Delhi government schools was around 15.28 lakh, in 2017-18 it has been 14.81 lakh, according to the survey.
According to the survey, while 7.18 lakh boys enrolled into government schools in 2016-17, in 2017-18 approximately 6.91 lakh boys enrolled. There has also been a dip in the number of girls enrolling into Delhi government schools from 8.1 lakh in 2016-17 to 7.9 lakh in 2017-18.
Further, according to the survey, there has been a 1.27% dip in enrolment into Delhi government aided schools between 2016-17 and 2017-18.
However, enrolment in unaided schools shows an upward trend with 16.21 lakh enrolment in 2017-18 as opposed to 15.65 lakh in 2016-17, according to the survey.
This comes even as the per student per annum expenditure incurred by the Delhi government has increased to ₹66,038 in 2018-19 as opposed to ₹50,682 in 2016-17, according to the survey.
The survey added that 8,095 additional classrooms have been made functional in existing government schools while nursery classes were introduced in 301 government schools in 2018.
The total number of schools in Delhi has gone up from 5155 in 2012-13 to 5760 in 2017-18 with an increase in enrolment from 42.68 lakh in 2012-13 to 43.93 lakh in 2017-18. “Enrolment in primary and middle in private schools have increased from 12.04 lakh in 2013-14 to 14.51 lakh in 2017-18,” said the survey.
