An driver with an app-based cab aggregator has been arrested for robbing his passengers in Greater Noida, the police said on Wednesday. “The accused was sent to jail after being produced in court on Wednesday,” they said.

Narendra alias Yogi, a resident of Dankaur in Greater Noida, was nabbed near ATS Square in Greater Noida’s Kasna following a tip-off.

The police said at least 21 cases are registered against Narendra in the district for robbery, murder, loot, robbery and assault. He was in jail in connection with a case under the Gangsters Act in 2017, the police said.

Narendra worked as a driver with Ola and drove his own car. The accused targeted his victims by offering them a lift before looting them.

“The accused told the police during questioning that he started working as a cab driver after he was released on bail. His modus operandi was to offer lifts to passengers after his shift and later rob them at gunpoint. He had also started making his victims withdraw money from ATMs. He had robbed an engineer from Kanpur of ₹60,000 in November after offering him a lift,” said Gautam Buddh Nagar SSP Vaibhav Krishna.

He added that the police will soon write to Ola telling them not to hire any driver without police verification.

“The accused started working as a cab driver after getting bail. We will send a letter to Ola asking them not to register drivers without proper police verification,” Mr. Krishna said.
