Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee working president Rajesh Lilothia on Friday held a meeting with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) representatives to discuss the outfits’ preparations for the Delhi University Students’ Union elections scheduled to be held on September 12.

Mr. Lilothia said that the student community was agitated after the bust of Veer Savarkar, who had “sided with the British during the Independence movement”, was placed along with those of Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose

“It is very shocking that a great learning institution like the Delhi University has been party to the insult of great freedom fighters of the country by allowing the ABVP to install the bust of Veer Savarkar,” he said.

He alleged that Savarkar had apologised to the British rulers 16 times in writing and had worked against the freedom struggle.

Mr. Lilothia said that the NSUI’s election plank would be to rise above narrow political agenda and discuss issues which would be beneficial to the student community. He added that the Congress party will not allow saffronisation of educational institutions in the country.
