A Delhi University student was allegedly molested and thrashed by a group of men in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar on Friday night. The incident happened when the 23-year-old victim was returning to her hostel with a friend, the police said.

The matter came to fore when the victim’s friend made a PCR call stating that she was being beaten by a group of men, said a senior police officer.

The victim in her statement said that the incident happened so quick that she was unable to react.

While narrating the incident to the police, she said that on Friday evening, along with five of her friends, she had gone to watch a movie in a nearby theatre. After the movie, they took a cab, which dropped them at their locality around 10 p.m.

Pulled off her cap

While four of her friends dispersed in different directions, she along with another friend, started walking towards her hostel.

She was a few metres away from her hostel when a man, who appeared to be in his early twenties, suddenly pulled off her cap. She stated in her complaint that the act agitated her and she pushed him aside. Angered by this, the man shouted out to his friends who were sitting nearby at an eatery.

A group of six men, all of whom appeared to be college students, circled her and started beating her up.

The student said she tried her best to retaliate but was soon overpowered.

The police have registered a complaint under charges of molestation and voluntarily causing hurt.

“We have recovered a few CCTV images from the spot and areas adjoining it. We are trying to identify the accused,” the officer added.
