A dog was beaten to death, allegedly by a security guard, on the Delhi Technological University (DTU) campus on Thursday. While police probe and an internal enquiry by DTU have been initiated, animal rights activists continued to protest against the killing a day after the incident.
“Violence the only way”
A university official claimed the dog had bitten 15 persons on campus, even as they waited for the municipal authorities to arrive and take it away, which is why “violence was the only way to control it”.
The activists filed a complaint at Shahbad Dairy police station after the protest. They also shared a chilling video. It shows a guard in uniform torturing the dog repeatedly, even as voices in the background are heard saying that the dog was well behaved. The dog is heard howling in agony and barely moving after sustaining one blow after the other.
In his complaint, Saurabh Gupta of People For Animals said they received a complaint about a dog being been killed.
“We were told that a video had been uploaded on social media. When we reached the campus, initial probe revealed that a guard had beaten the dog on instructions from senior university and administration officials. This a crime under IPC Section 429,” he said.
Another protester Ankita Mehra wondered why animal rescue centres had not been called to take the “rabid” dog away.
PRO responds
DTU PRO Anoop Lather said he had call records to prove that the North Delhi civic body had been called. Stating that the dog had been biting people, he said a fest was on and they couldn’t have risked more victims.
The police complaint does mention a name, but Mr. Lather said the guard had not been identified till Friday evening as the video was shot from a top angle.
