The body of a 33-year-old DMRC employee has been found in the basement of the Metro Bhawan, the police said on Monday.

The police said that the employee is suspected to have died by suicide. He might have jumped from a substantial height, they said, adding that no note left behind by the deceased was found near the body.

The deceased hailed from Varanasi and resided in the national capital.

A DMRC spokesperson said the man had been working as a maintenance fitter since 2017 and was found dead in the basement near the stairs which connect all the floors of the DMRC corporate office at Metro Bhawan, on Monday morning.

The matter was immediately reported to the police after which the body was taken for a post-mortem examination, a DMRC official said, adding that the crime team visited the spot and matter is being further investigated.

“It appears that the incident might have taken place on Friday evening when the office was closing for the weekend. The body was spotted after the office reopened today [Monday] morning,” the spokesperson said.

“The DMRC is taking up the matter with the security agency responsible for the security of the Metro Bhawan as to how they could not detect the body earlier and to ensure that all areas are properly sanitized in future,” the spokesperson also said.

CCTV footage

The police, meanwhile, also said that the CCTV footage shows the employee moving towards the stairs on the seventh floor of the Metro Bhawan on March 22. “A missing report was also filed at Barakhamba Road police station the next day,” Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), said.

The body was discovered by a security guard, he also said.

“Proceedings under 174 CrPC have been initiated,” Mr. Verma added.

Marital dispute

The deceased got married on December 15 last year and had been having a matrimonial dispute ever since they tied the knot. His wife left him exactly a month after their wedding, the police said.
