In order to cut down water loss in the distribution network of the Delhi Jal Board and also in the service connections of the consumers, the water utility board has set up a Leak Detection Investigation Cell.
Its mandate is to detect leakage points – both on the surface and underground – and plug them to prevent water loss.
The cell, equipped with modern equipment, would soon launch a special drive to detect surface leakages as well as hidden leakages in the entire city.
Officials said apart from saving water, contamination of water will also be reduced through the exercise.
“Based on various studies conducted by consultants of international repute, it was found that leakages through old distribution mains and house service connections lead to substantial water loss. The leakages appearing on the ground can be identified easily and rectified immediately,” an official said.
“However, leakages under the ground in the water mains and consumers’ service connections are difficult to trace and can also lead to water contamination as contaminated water can enter the pipeline through the leaking points,” an official added.
The cell has been directed to detect all the leakages in their respective areas within the next three months.
This will also lead to reduction of non-revenue water, an official said.
The initiative is part of the DJB’s effort to implement the Summer Action Plan for 2015 to meet the water demand during the summer months.
The Board has also taken various steps to ensure sustainable water supply this summer.
The DJB, with limited raw water availability, is focusing on efficient water management to ensure equitable water distribution in Delhi.
